West End Medical Centre was founded by Hillary and Stewart Wilson. Hillary had been in medical practice for 18 years when she opened the clinic on Maunu Road. A few years later, the practice relocated to its current location at 84 Maunu Road, continuing its commitment to providing quality, family-friendly healthcare to the Whangārei community.
In 2013, the practice underwent a change of ownership when Dr Moira Chamberlain and Iain Watkins purchased the clinic. Moira, who had worked at West End Medical prior to the purchase, wanted to ensure that the warm, family-focused atmosphere would be preserved and not lost to a corporate organisation.
Our comfortable waiting area, complete with toys for the tamariki, is in the cottage that was once the original farmhouse of the Maunu cattle farm. It’s a unique setting that helps create a warm, welcoming environment where patients of all ages feel at ease while waiting for their appointments.
Dr Moira Chamberlain grew up in Whangārei and joined West End Medical Centre in 2011. Before joining the practice, she worked in the Emergency Department at Whangārei Hospital and later served as the Kaupapa Māori Medical Advisor to Kia Ora Ngatiwai in Kamo. Moira holds a Paediatrics Diploma and is trained to perform minor surgical procedures. She is passionate about providing personalised, culturally aware care to her patients.
Iain Watkins is originally from Auckland but has lived in Whangārei for over 20 years. A trained psychologist, Iain began his career at Whangārei Hospital and progressed to Group Manager of Mental Health and Clinical Support Services. Before purchasing West End Medical Centre with Moira, he worked in private practice. Iain now manages the practice full-time, supporting both the clinical team and the broader patient community.
